:: Certification

OT has put together a Certification Committee to evaluate local faith-based nonprofit organizations as to their credibility and soundness in policies and procedures in a number of areas. This Certification will help the donor community know who is a good choice for funds to be given to.

For more information, please contact John Adair at 810-985-8171 or Tom Seppo at 810-966-8660.

Mission Statement:

The Board of Directors of Operation Transformation identified a need in our community for faith-based organizations, organized on a charitable basis, which have not fully developed their organizations and processes.  Specifically, the area’s donor organizations who are approached for funding from faith-based organizations have sought guidance from Operation Transformation as to the credibility and worthiness of various organizations.

To meet this need, the OT Board instituted the Faith Based Certification Committee with the purpose of establishing a process by which faith-based entities may apply for certification.  The Certification Committee is comprised of an accountant, an attorney, an insurance agent, an executive director of a non-profit organization, the executive director of Operation Transformation, and a business owner.  The Committee has adopted a Certification Application which covers areas such as the organization’s activities, corporate structure, fundraising, financial and tax data, faith-based purposes, and governance.  Upon completion of a thorough and detailed review of an organization’s application and the information provided, the Committee completes a Grade Sheet with grades ranging from “Satisfactory”, “Satisfactory with Suggested Additions/Changes”, and “Requires Modification”.  To be Certified, an organization must receive all Satisfactory grades for each criteria required by the Committee.  The Certification remains valid for three years provided that the organization submits the Annual Checklist to the Committee with updates on basic organizational information.

The Committee has adopted a general conflict of interest policy that the members of the Committee shall not provide professional advice to applicants other than the suggestions made for compliance with the Committee’s grading system for certification.  The intent of the Certification process is to provide an independent review of a faith-based organization’s affairs on which donor organizations can rely when considering making charitable contributions.
