“Make a Difference Day” was Saturday, October 24. It is a nationally celebrated day of volunteerism. OT has sponsored neighborhood cleanup projects for the last 6 years. This year, about 200 people came out to rake and pick up trash in the Harrison School district area, and
clean for senior citizens. It was a wonderful opportunity to bless our community. A big thanks to Olive Garden for providing a hot Italian lunch for all, and Colonial Woods for hosting it.
At Operation Transformation, we are always looking at ways to impact our community and highlight the
fact that churches are a foundational source of help for people. Our motto is “Churches Cooperating for
a Changed Community”. One way that we can do that is by working together on a particular day to do
community service and publicize that fact to the local media.
Operation Transformation has been a facilitator for “Make a Difference Day” for the past 6 years. It is a
day of volunteerism across the nation. This year, “Make a Difference Day” is Saturday, October 24.
We would like to encourage you and your church to spend the morning doing some type of community
service/work outreach that will “make a difference”. This could be projects to the elderly/needy in your
congregation, something to help those in your local neighborhood, help clean up a public area – the list
is endless! This could be done by a youth group, men’s / women’s group, families, or even one person.
The point is - churches already do a lot to help people in our community. If everyone does it on the
same day, we have a greater ability to showcase that fact. It is not too early to start thinking about how
your church might go about organizing community service. We want to encourage you to “start the
process”. OT is working with the City of Port Huron, the Council on Aging, the Salvation Army and
other organizations to find projects to do. If you need assistance in finding a project, give a call and we
can help get you connected.
We’d like everyone doing something to meet together at 8:30am on October 24 at the same location
(tentatively the south McMorran Parking lot), even if you have your own projects. It will be a
wonderful way to show the Body of Christ coming together in a BIG way. After a brief instruction and
opening prayer, people will disperse to do their community service. OT will then get the information
out to the local media (and include some pictures), with lists of churches and substantiating numbers.
Our purpose is to coordinate a larger outreach (that probably is already happening on a spread-out basis)
and highlight what churches are doing to be a blessing in our community.
